SSC 6th Annual Scooter Charity Event – 18th December 2011
For the first time since 2005 we decided it was time to support a local Saigon charity within the city so after months of searching for a worthy cause and there are many here we finally decided to support a Pagoda on the outskirts of Saigon city in Nha Be and the Santa In the City event was set.
Morning kick off as per the last few years was at Sesame Restaurant which is also a training centre for disadvantaged kids, and for the price 300,000vnd (all proceeds from ticket sales are going to the Pagoda) this year’s rally kit included t-shirt, banner, stickers, breakfast buffet, afternoon bbq and evening entertainment. As the numbers have been increasing as with last year we enrolled the help of the Big Bike Club (aka Local Police) to escort us through the city and as Clarkson aptly described it “ a seething cauldron of barely organised chaos”
11.00am saw the somewhat chaotic departure as usual to the outskirts of Saigon with over 200 riders heading to Huyen Trang Pagoda through bustling downtown district 1 After a few groups were lost along the way we re-grouped in district 7 and then drove in force into the quiet peaceful suburb of the Pagoda. The Pagoda is home to over 40 orphans, 20 elderly and agent orange victims as well as supporting many other areas of Vietnam when needed including Danang where the severe floods devastated the area last year.
Speeches followed with games, cold Peroni for the drivers and we finished with a memorable Santa visit for the kids including loads of presents, chocolate cakes and homemade chocolate’s.
With much discussion about what time the bbq was going to kick off we headed back with a loop around the city through district 7 and over Phu My bridge around through Thu Duc arriving at Café Huong Cuong Classic Bike café a new venue which had just opened showcasing a collection of over 100 scooters and classic bikes. With the afternoon bbq quickly demolished it was time for the first proper Gymkhana in Vietnam’s history! With a brave attempt and many a tumble (in hindsight it could have been made a touch easier) we called it a day for the event as fuelled by cheap beers the display scooters around us where at risk of getting written off….
After that time for Dj Kenzo and then Awards . These included custom show prizes, raffle and awards for the Gymkhana and slow drive.
The last party goers wrapped up late and then headed to district 1 to continue the party until the small hours.
All in all we raised over 80,000,000vnd, supplied numerous boxes of food to the Pagoda and left hundreds of presents for the kids.
